Lucy
We adopted Lucy from Free Spirit in January of 2005. My husband and I had gone in to their open house because they had a little of five puppies and we wanted to get one as a friend for our then nine-month old Shepard Lab. My husband and I had raised him from a 10 week old puppy and because we work quite a bit, we could tell that he was very lonely, spending all his week-days alone. Iggy had definitely put us through the trials of puppyhood but we were prepared to undertake this again in order for him to have a friend.

However, fate did not have it in the cards for us to take home one of the pups. The day before we went to the open house, one the volunteers for the rescue called me and told me Lucy's story. She had come from a Kansas kill shelter in December with what was thought a broken leg. As far as they could tell she had been a stray and was hit by a car. When she arrived at Free Spirit and was examined by the vet, her leg was only dislocated. After mending for almost 4 weeks, she was adopted and went to Madison, WI.

But, alas, poor Lucy was being returned to Free Spirit because her owner was allergic. Her story tore at my heart at hearing how she was bounced around from place to place with no home. Now, it just so happened that Lucy was the same age as our Iggy so we agreed to have the two meet. When we went out that cold January afternoon, Iggy was so excited to see other dogs he hardly new what to do with himself. A volunteer brought out Lucy and we had them meet in the rescue's large fenced in running area. They immidatly hit it off and started tearing up the place playing tag. My husband and I knew that Lucy was the right little girl for our Iggs.

After only five short months, Lucy has fully adapted to our house and she is such a blessing. She's so gental and caring for all of us. In the evening when we come home, she loves to grab the neariest toy, preferribly a tennis ball, and parade around the house, her head high in the air, calling out "whooo-oohh" to welcome us home. She knows 'speak' very well and never ceases to amaze us with her manuverability when playing with Iggy. In fact, they are practily inseperable and both will whine when they don't have access to each other. I have a saying that I use now that fits the situation perfectly. Because we got Iggs when my husband and I were going through a lot of job changes, I often will tell people, "Iggy saved us and Lucy saved Iggy."

The picture below was not posed. Lucy was hanging out underneath our kitchen table and Iggy plopped down in front of her.
