Carmella

Carmella
We had always wanted a husky--we're crazy--but we never did anything about it until the NIU Homecoming game of '03. There we saw the beautiful dogs Free Spirit had to offer & admired one called Roxy. However, upon visiting Roxy, we discovered she was not cat-friendly, which was important to us since we had a
16-yr. old cat. We looked at a few others, then Carmella came out of the bathroom and I said, "Let's try this one." She seemed to want to play with the cats, not eat them as some of the others did. We took her for a test spin & my son said, "This one." A few weeks later Karen brought her & we spent the next month adjusting to each other. Fortunately, she was 100% housebroken. The adjustment period took a turn when we found Carmella was epileptic. However, she is on meds & has mild seizures every few months (in the cool months) to every few weeks (in hot weather). She gets 3 walks a day except in summer & all the neighborhood kids have to pet the dog they all know by name. After our cat died a year ago, her nighttime restrictions were lifted & she now fights us for bed space each night. Carmella constantly amazes us with her vocal virtuosity. In a span of 10 min., she can sound like a car engine trying to start, a bull walrus, an opera singer, a car alarm and every possible tone and note in between. She loves pig ears, food of any kind & belly scratching. She's been a joy for us all. We bring her to mom's at Thanksgiving & she gets the royal treatment from our extended family. Thanks to you for bringing us together!
